French Tech Hub helped Restlet launch new technology in the U.S. leading to $4 million investment and top Gartner recognition

Manage any API

“French Tech Hub is a strategic partner for our U.S. endeavors. They first brought unique insights from Silicon Valley into our U.S. development project. Once ready to move forward, they provided a clear and fast track to create our U.S. subsidiary, and they provided us with both strategic planning and market assessment. I am happy they are still on our side, supporting our U.S. operations and allowing us to focus on our core business”

– Jerome Louvel, Founder, Restlet

Restlet had already successfully developed a large community of users and developers around its open source “Restlet Framework” created in 2005 and adopted by large U.S. companies such as Google, Linkedln and IBM. In September 2012, Restlet developed APISpark, a cloud platform (PaaS) enabling the creation, hosting and management of web APIs and their data stores.

Industry studies then forecasted one million web APIs in 2017 and showed the U.S. remained the key market. With this data, Restlet executives knew they needed to test APISpark’s value proposition in the U.S.

Restlet’s idea won the company a place in the New Technology Venture Accelerator, a program run by the French Embassy. As part of the program, in 2012, Restlet management was invited to go to San Francisco for special U.S. business training and direct interactions with American executives. After one week in the U.S., Restlet’s founder, Jérome Louvel, was convinced that launching in the U.S. would dramatically boost his company’s new product adoption. He needed to find the right strategy and engaged French Tech Hub to define it.

In a quick 3 months, French Tech Hub gathered market data and insights from key opinion leaders. With Business France’s support, Restlet would meet with more than a dozen different companies in the telecom and software industry to validate the potential market attraction.

Jérome also met with Bertrand Diard, Talend’s cofounder who became a Restlet Board Advisor and later, became chairman of Restlet’s Board.

After validating the U.S. market in Q4 2012, French Tech Hub helped Restlet create a U.S. subsidiary and secured an E2-visa for Jérome. Since then, French Tech Hub has managed Restlet’s U.S. backoffice operations including domiciliation, accounting, taxes, etc.

The market validation and Bertrand’s support enabled Restlet to raise $4M of funding from Capdecisif Management and Siparex. Restlet was named a Cool Vendor in Specialized PaaS by Gartner in May 2015.
